Sirius Aviation Unveils Hydrogen Jet That Costs $500 to Refuel

Sirius Aviation, in collaboration with BMW Designworks, has unveiled the Sirius CEO Jet, a winged eVTOL featuring 28 ducted fans and powered by hydrogen fuel cells, offering a range of 1,150 miles.

It boasts cost efficiency with a full fuel tank refill costing only $500, covering the maximum travel distance.

The Swiss aviation startup announced in January its plan to launch two hydrogen-electric VTOL aircraft, in collaboration with BMW Designworks and the Sauber Group.

The global debut of the Sirius Jet took place on June 20, 2024, at the MOVE Expo in London. Company CEO Alexey Popov showcased the sleek redesign of the luxury Business Jet, now called the CEO Jet.

Quiet and Eco-Friendly Flight

Sirius Aviation’s aircraft operates nearly silently and reportedly generates 90% less noise than a helicopter.

At a distance of 100 meters, the aircraft produces noise comparable to a dishwasher, enabling it to operate near communities.

It also features an airframe parachute system that significantly minimizes the risk of incidents, claimed by the company to approach zero.

New Propulsion System

The new propulsion system uses 28 ducted fans to help reduce noise levels during flight. Out of these, 20 fans are placed along the wings, while 8 are installed on the canard.

Each fan is powered by its own electric motor in this 3-seater aircraft. According to the company, it can fly up to 1,150 miles (1,850 km) on a single charge.

Vertical Take-off and Landing (VTOL)

Vertical Take-Off and Landing (VTOL) allows the aircraft to fly directly from point to point, giving passengers the flexibility to land exactly where they need.

The Sirius CEO Jet is designed to operate quietly at under 60 dB and produces zero emissions, making it a cleaner and more environmentally friendly option for travel.

Exceeding Electric eVTOL Range

This VTOL aircraft brings together the best of both worlds, combining helicopter-style vertical takeoff and landing with the speed of a fixed-wing plane. With a range of 1,150 miles, it goes far beyond fully electric eVTOLs, which usually only manage around 150 miles.

The Sirius CEO Jet also features a pressurized cabin and a ducted fan system. This allows it to fly at altitudes of up to 30,000 feet and reach a cruising speed of 520 km/h (323 mph).

Sirius CEO-Jet Passenger Comfort

The Sirius CEO Jet comes with an emergency parachute system that automatically activates in critical situations, adding an extra layer of safety. This feature is designed to boost passenger confidence, especially for those who may feel uneasy about flying in small aircraft.

“We understand how important comfort is in smaller planes, and we’ve focused on solving that,” the company said.

Sirius also plans to launch two zero-emission aircraft by 2025. The SIRIUS CEO-JET is designed for private travel with seating for three passengers, while the SIRIUS ADVENTURE JET is built for commercial use, carrying up to five passengers and offering a range of up to 650 miles.
