Optimus Gen 2: Tesla’s Leap in Humanoid Robots

Optimus Gen 2, Tesla’s latest version of its humanoid robot also referred to as “Tesla Bot” is designed to handle repetitive tasks, taking over from humans.

Optimus Gen-2 has improved a lot since the first Bumble-C machine in 2022 and can now handle delicate objects with its fingers.

Tesla has given its humanoid robot a major makeover. The Optimus Gen 2 is now 10 kg (22 lb) lighter, 30% faster, smoother, and more capable. Its movements are more human-like, and it features new hands and feet, along with some Elon Musk style.

In just two years after Elon Musk’s announcement, Tesla’s robot team made functional models. The first “Optimus” robot impressed everyone when it was revealed in March. Now, in less than a year, Tesla has introduced the Optimus Gen 2, highlighting the latest advancements in humanoid robot technology.

Enhanced Features of Optimus Gen 2: Mobility and Dexterity

The Gen 2 robot has a two-degree neck movement, built-in electronics, and improved wiring. Its foot now has a more human shape with articulated toes and force/torque sensors.

It also features new hands with 11 degrees of movement, faster actuators, and tactile sensors on all fingers for better object manipulation.

It appears more streamlined and human-like, moves smoother, has improved balance, and walks less awkwardly, though you might still find it uncomfortable with knives.

Its fingers have tactile sensing, allowing it to gauge the necessary pressure for various tasks, like holding eggs. The video from Tesla demonstrates its ability to handle objects delicately.

In the demo video, Optimus Gen 2 does a balanced squat. Crafting effective humanoid robot hands is tough—they need strength for heavy lifting and precision for delicate tasks. Tesla’s Optimus Gen 2 brings in new hands, a crucial upgrade.

Although Tesla’s Gen 2 displays impressive progress, the true breakthrough will come when these robots prove their reliability and flexibility in real-world tasks.
